Whole Food Focus: Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar (sometime known in short as “ACV”) is made by crushing fresh, organically grown apples and allowing them to mature in wooden barrels. This process boosts the natural fermentation qualities of the crushed apples, which differs from the refined and distilled vinegars found traditionally in supermarkets.

When the vinegar is mature, it creates web-like bacterial foam called “the mother” (I know, kinda funny…)  which becomes visible when the rich brownish liquid is held to the light. ACV that contains “the mother” has enzymes and minerals that other vinegars usually don’t (due to over-processing, overheating, and excess filtration).

Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural bacteria-fighting agent that contains many vital minerals and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron, silicon and fluorine that are vital for a healthy body. ACV contains something called malic acid, which boosts cellular detoxification of toxic metals and relieves the body’s’ inflammatory /pain response.

ACV helps to promote healthy blood sugar levels, can improve digestion, lower cholesterol, blood pressure, reduces the risk of certain types of cancers, promotes weight loss, prevent bladder stones and urinary tract infections, aid in various stomach problems and so much more. ACV is also helpful in balancing the body’s pH, balancing stomach acids and reducing inflammatory responses.  You can incorporate apple cider vinegar into your diet by using it in homemade salad dressings, as well as in medicinal teas/elixirs.

Below I’m sharing my personal favorite medicinal alkalizing ACV “tonic” (but there are many)!

The ACV is antibacterial, alkalizing and balancing. The lemon is also alkalizing and rich in vitamin C. Royal jelly is loaded with B vitamins and enzymes (along with anti-microbial properties!) The cinnamon helps to slow the rate at which your stomach empties (and helps to balance blood sugar levels!)

Jennifer Leigh’s Alkalizing and Energizing ACV Tonic:

  • 4-6oz warm water
  • 1-2 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 lemon, squeezed
  • 1 tsp royal jelly
  • 1-2 drop oregano oil
  • dash of cinnamon to your taste

You can find Royal Jelly at your local health food store, or buy it online!
