Everyday Products + Your Hormones: The Toxic TRUTH

It’s a toxic world out there. Pollution, sunscreen, plastics…but what about our personal care and home cleaning products?

In a given day,  do you know how many products are you using in/on and around your body? The average person uses between 11-19 products daily, and I am certain all of us THINK what we are using is safe.

Truth be told it has been 70+ YEARS since any new regulations have been passed on personal care products. Please, just think for a moment about how technology, ingredients, everything has drastically changed over 7 DECADES of time. And yes, we are still living by those old regulations.  It’s kinda scary.

More than 70% of the chemicals found in today’s personal care products are never tested for safety. Um, how is this possible? Because the law protects them. Yup. A very old law, but it is still the law.  See, back in the 1970’s a law was passed that “broadly” mandated how chemicals can enter into the market, and it  has never been revised, reviewed or updated ever since. Go read the back of your shampoo bottle and tell me how you feel about all those ingredients now – it is so scary!

The E.U. has actively banned and/or regulated upwards of 1,300 toxic and potentially toxic ingredients allowed in personal and body care products. Sah-WEET! The United States you ask? We have banned a a wopping 11. (omg seriously?…yes. Seriously.)

I talk about these toxic and dangerous ingredients to ALL of my clients, because it is these VERY ingredients that we are using EVERY day that I  strongly believe are contributing to the epidemic of hormone related imbalances we are seeing. These ingredients are TOXIC xenoestrogens and endocrine disruptors messing with our delicate hormones slowly but surely.

Epidemic Proportions.

Think about this ladies: hormone imbalances, thyroid disease, infertility, breast cancer – ALL increasing.  I talk all the time about the critical importance of buying organic and reading ingredients on listed labels – but what goes ON and AROUND our skin matters just as much, if not more. Our skin is our largest organ and key in the body’s detox process.

Do you read the ingredients listed in your body care and home care products? If not, you must check out this recent study, it may get you interested and put things in perspective for you. Bottom line: most body products are NOT safe. You need to start reading what is being sprayed on your body and in your home.

Sadly, I see “natural” brands touting “natural” ingredients and guess what- even many of those are TOXIC. So how do we know who to trust and what brands to use? Well, the BEST way to ensure a toxic free home and body is to make your own products. Yes, I realize this sounds difficult and very Martha Stuart, but when you start to downsize the number of products you use (you really only need a few) it is easier and far more cost effective.  This is why I love my essential oils. I started with a small starter kit and over time I now make virtually ALL my own body care and home cleaning products, I even have made ALL of my baby care products too. I am starting to explore TRUELY toxic free make-up too, and BeautyCounter.com offers amazing products.

Endocrine Disruptors Everywhere.

Xenoestrogens are a type of foreign hormones derived from either synthetic or natural compounds which imitate estrogen. Synthetic xenoestrogens include  industrial compounds PCBs, BPA and phthalates and they can be detrimental to your hormonal balance. Basically Xenoestrogens  increase “estrogen look alikes” which interferes with the way estrogen is utilized in your body.

So what are the top ingredients to avoid?

Here are my top 5 Hormone Haters commonly lurking in your home and beauty products. {Join my Healthy Bits Newsletter to download a complete list of body and beauty care ingredients to avoid + DYI recipes using essential oils}

1. Parabens (look for ingredients containing “methyl” isobutyl” or “proply”. Parabens are powerful in inhibiting bacteria and are also known hormone disruptors. They increase “estrogen lookalikes”  which in turn can mess with how estrogen is utilized in your body. Parabens are widely known for their contributions to breast cancer and other hormone issues and are hiding in your lotions, cleansers body wash, and makeup.

2. Triclosan (also known as Triclocarban) effects the reproductive system and is found EVERYWHERE from antibacterial soaps, facial wash, baby products and toothpastes.

3. BHA, BHT and Mineral Oil:  not only are these endocrine disrupting, they are also cancer promoting carcinogens negatively affect liver health. Pssst: your liver is CRUCIAL for hormone balance and detox. Look for this ingredient in Baby products (really?!), lip balm, face and body moisturizers and many common cosmetics.

4. Fragrance:  Sadly, the actual components of any given “fragrance” ingredients never have to be disclosed. It is considered “intellectual property” and “trade secrets” of the product. And guess what? Fragrance is everywhere. It is also where TONS of toxins can sneak into otherwise “natural” products on the market and is found in cosmetics, perfume, cleaning agents and more. Read your labels.

5. Phthalates  (DBP, DEHP, DEP and others): Frankly stated, phthalates are MAJOR endocrine disruptors that can be so toxic that they may cause birth defects. You can find phthalates lurking “synthetic fragrance”, nail polish, hairspray and many other sprayable products.

Too many chemicals of concern that we use on a daily basis. It’s always imperative to read labels and know what type of chemicals you are exposing your family members to. I’m definitely going to try the coconut oil as alternative to my face cream. Thanks for sharing =)
